To survey the entire property or not for a fence line?

Got a client asking if I can just mark one property line. Specifically, he wants to mark the side he shares with his neighbor who's apparently a "serial line-crosser." That's what he called it at least, and it's quite funny lol.

So now... he wants me to set up a fence, but doesn't wanna pay for a full survey of his 7- acre lot. I'm leaning toward doing the whole survey first so I'm not just guessing off partial info. This is like the third time this happened out of maybe hundreds of clients through the years but now I got this forum to help me.

I'm curious how you guys would tackle this without eating the cost. Please, please give some techniques.

You already know the answer but I think you're a bit unsure, tell the guy straight to either do the full boundary survey or he finds someone else to play the guessing game. If he wants to save money, he can flag it "approximate" and take the risk himself but don't put your name or license on half baked work.

Always push for the full survey, it protects you and the client. If he balks, offer to mark that line after reviewing existing records, but note it's not guaranteed and document everything, I mean everything!

Yep, getting a full survey is the way to go for protection. If the client's unsure, marking the line based on records is okay, but be super clear it's not perfect and keep good notes
