Who pays for survey over tree?

There's an old tree near my property line with branches reaching into my neighbor's yard. Now they're saying the trunk might actually sit on their land and they want to hire a surveyor to confirm before deciding what to do with it. The issue is that they expect me to help cover the cost. This feels like their dispute, not mine since I never questioned the boundary. In a Texas property line dispute who pays for survey, is it always shared or is it on the person raising the issue?

Why should you split the cost if you never questioned the boundary in the first place? Shouldn't the responsibility fall on whoever's raising the concern and initiating the survey?

In Texas, the person raising the dispute usually pays for the survey, you're not obligated to split the cost unless you both agree to it

Thanks for the backup. Both of you are reading it the same way I am. I didn't kick the hornet's nest here, so I don't see why I should be footing the bill. If they want to draw lines in the sand, they can pay to prove it.
That said, if the survey ends up showing the tree's on my side, I'd be open to talking next steps. Has anyone here ever had a neighbor try to split survey costs after the fact?

A friend of mine has a similar problem with his neighbor, not in Texas though, but I don't think that would make a difference because as far as he was able to find, there's no law about who should and shouldn't pay. The neighbor was a pain in the ass and was harassing him over a tree and wanted to have the land surveyed. My friend said knock yourself out, pay for it and we'll be done. The neighbor didn't want to pay and after a ton of threats, police, layers and everything a male Karen can do, he finally backed off.

Helpful to hear how your friend handled a similar situation, though I hope my own doesn't escalate to that level. Things have been quiet on my end for over a month since I told them I wouldn't contribute to the survey cost.

They can hire and they can pay for the surveyor. We had a similar situation with one of our neighbors and he was insisting that we pay and my dad went all political and said whoever is in the wrong pays. This dude was so sure he was right accepted. Guess what, he wasn't, so he tried to weasel his way out of paying, but at the end he coughed up the cash.
